What’s Next?

Next Steps

1. Initial Contact

The process begins with a brief telephone call.

Counsel and/or clients are welcome to reach out by email or telephone to discuss the nature of the matter and which service may be most appropriate.

2. Consultation

A complimentary 30-minute consultation is available.

At this stage, only high-level information is required, including:

  • place of residence

  • number and ages of the children

  • whether there is an existing parenting plan or Minutes of Settlement

  • or whether you are at an earlier stage requiring assistance in developing a plan

The appropriate process—mediation, arbitration, or a combined Med/Arb model—will be considered based on:

  • the issues in dispute

  • proportionality

  • and the best interests of the child

Support may include:

  • development of parenting plans

  • decision-making and parenting time arrangements

  • child and spousal support

  • section 7 expenses

  • sale of the matrimonial home

Fit, scope, and availability will also be discussed.

3. Retainer

If you wish to proceed, a retainer agreement will be provided for review and execution, together with the required retainer.

Depending on the service selected, the agreement may be signed by:

  • one or both parties, and/or

  • their respective counsel

Independent legal advice (ILA) is strongly recommended for mediation matters.

4. Intake & Screening

Following retention, an intake and screening meeting will be scheduled (typically 1–2 hours).

This is a substantive and essential step, involving:

  • a detailed understanding of family circumstances

  • clarification of the issues to be addressed

  • screening for family violence, power imbalance, and overall process suitability

This ensures that the process is appropriate, safe, and structured for meaningful engagement.

Substantive work begins following completion of intake and screening, and where appropriate, consultation with counsel.
